According to Greek mythology, the current Parâng mountains were said to be host to the Greek Gods. It is the highest mountain in the Hunedoara county with its peak reaching an altitude of 2.519 metres. Greek mythology says that Prometheus was made to reside in the Parangos mountains for over 3.000 years as a punishment given by Zeus.

Parâng is surrounded by many other mountains. There are the Șureanu mountains to the north, the Retezat mountains to the north-west, the Vâlcan mountains to the west and Căpățânii mountains to the east. Besides being the highest mountain in Hunedoara, Parângul Mare is also the fourth-highest mountains in Romania. Its most notable peaks are Cârja (2.405 metres), Parângul Mic (2.074 metres) along with the Mija, Stoienița and Mohorul peaks. It is also a home for 22 glacial lakes with Gâlcescu, Roșiile, Mija and Verde being the most popular ones.
100 kilometres away from Deva, only 10 kilometres from Petroșani
The Parâng resort or Petroșani-Parâng as is also named by specific papers is located in the Northen side of the Parâng mountains, in the south-east of Hunedoara county. There are 100 kilometres from Deva to Parâng. Once you reach Petroșani, you only have 10 more kilometres until your destination. The ski domain is found under the Parângul Mic peak. The access to the domain is made through a chairlift. You will climb from 950 metres to 1.650 metres, a total of 700 metres.
Ski, sledge, snowboard and paragliding!
The road is asphalted until the chairlift, where you can park your car. Even though there is a ski domain, you can also visit during the summer to visit its amazing peaks. There are many activities you can do ranging from skiing, snowboarding, driving ATVs or snowmobiles to paraglide. There’s a group dedicated to paragliding along with a school for people passionated about aerial adrenaline. All you have to do is follow the dedicated events and seek the professional’s help.
Ski touring and alternative slopes at Straja and Vidra
There are two chairlifts – the old one located at the base of the skiing domain and the newer one that descends to the Rusu Hotel. The old chairlift has two drop points. The first stop is made at the lodging area while the next stop is at the highest altitude of the ski domain. The slopes are in good condition and you can see the Retezat Mountains and the scenery of Jiului Valley while ascending. Parâng also offers ski touring: you can ascend to the Parângul Mic peak and then to the main ridge towards the Cârja peak or the Parângul Mare peak. You can also try Straja’s and Vidra’s skiing slopes as well if you find yourself in Jiului Valley.
