The Museum of Ethnography and Folk Art is located in the center of Orastie, being established in 1952, at the request of a group of locals who have formed a "voluntary team". Initially, the patrimony included about 800 exhibits that came from donations, consisting of technical installations, tools, ceramics, coins, vessels and many other illustrative materials for the evolution of the standard of living of the inhabitants of these lands.
Subsequently, the profile of the museum is oriented towards folk art in the early 70's, more precisely in 1974 when the permanent exhibition was reorganized. Thus, the title of the museum was changed, being called the Museum of Ethnography and Folk Art. During this period, the exhibition highlighted material and artistic creations of the Romanian popular culture from the Orăștie area, elements of spiritual life and the individualized character of the folk customs and creations from this area. Starting with 1991, the Orăștie museum is subordinated to the Museum of Dacian and Roman Civilization Deva, as its section.
Tourists who cross the threshold of this museum can admire the temporary exhibition "Craft Traditions", which brings together several goods from the heritage of the section, which reflects the way and tools that people in the area of Orăștie used to practice crafts. We are talking here about crafts such as processing iron, clay, hides, vegetable and animal fibers, clay, but also dioramas (large painting, consisting of several planes, which gives the impression of reality) and layout of installations. The last of the dioramas is dedicated to the traditional peasant dwelling in the land of Orăștie and the spectacular specific holiday outfits with its ethical components and vivid color.
The main exhibition takes place in six rooms, organized thematically, including the main occupations of people in this area, secondary occupations such as nature harvesting, hunting, fishing, beekeeping, woodworking, weaving, leather processing, archaeological collections and numismatics as well as aspects of folk costume, customs and habits, religion and spiritual life. Here can be admired, practically, a large part of the life of those who lived in the Orăștie area.
