One of the landmarks of the Jiu Valley that attracts tourists as a magnet is Schitul Straja (the Straja Hermitage), a place of worship located right in the mountains, with a beauty and a unique history.

Its story is impressive: “One night in 1996 at Cabana Montana (Mountain Cabin), the light in a room lit, the light bulb burned, and the filament flame printed a cross on the glass of the bulb. The light bulb was broken by one of the tourists, but later on a second incident of this kind took place, another cross appeared on another light bulb. This bulb can be seen at the Straja church. The bulb was taken to the Lainici Monastery Bishop, who said that in those places there were people who died in World War I and were not buried in accordance with the Christian customs. This is how it was decided to erect the Heroes Cross in Straja, in memory of the heroes of the nation. In 1999, the Straja Hermitage was erected, to bring the holy peace to this place.

The church bears the Sign of the Ascension of the Holy Cross and the Holy Emperors Constantine and Helena. Since 2006 the entrance to the Straja Church passes through a 50-meter long tunnel on the walls of which the entire Church Calendar and scenes from the Old and New Testaments are painted. " The little place of worship, where every year an impressive Christening service with holly water brought from the heart of the mountains is celebrated, was built in 1999 in 3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days. There is also an impressive religious procession that starts from the central Lupeni municipality, called suggestively "The Road of the Cross" and which gathers thousands of believers from around the country on Good Friday.
