One of the six fortresses of the UNESCO patrimony, the fortress in the Orăştie Mountains is one of the most mysterious ones belonging to the dacian fortification system. Built south-west of Sarmizegetusa Regia, it is situated on the territory of the National Park Grădiștea Muncelului-Cioclovina.

A fortress of global patrimony.

Marian Coman, vice-president of Dacica Foundation, stated that the fortress was introduced in the UNESCO global patrimony in 1999 along with Grădiștea de Munte, Costești-Cetățuie, Costești-Blidaru, Bănița and Căpâlna.

The fortress was built with two fortified enclosures, totalling 1.2 ha. These were probably the headquarters of highly ranked figures back in the day. There are many traces left near the fortress that show the fact that the area was highly populated even in antiquity.

Established during Burebista's rule

The first information about the fortress dates back to the start of the 19th century. The archeologic research was first started in 1949 and then resumed in 2004. Its history probably stretches to one and a half-century, during Burebista's rule until the end of the dacian kingdom.

Obviously, the fortress fell victim to the Roman legion which was advancing towards Sarmizegetusa Regia. The houses were burned and walls were torn down.

The magic of a special fortress

Due to the fortress degrading as time went on if you decide to explore it for yourself don't expect to see it in an amazing condition. However, there are things to see in its area from which the most important one is the road paved in stars that "cuts" the forest in two. Once you find yourself in the fortress you will be greeted by an amazing view of the vale.

Unfortunately, the fortress did not escape the treasure seekers' eyes. The area was scanned with metal detectors after 1990 and they have taken whatever they found, however, most of the object were found and brought back.

Even if it is one of the lesser-known fortresses, the Red Rock will definitely leave you with an unforgettable memory.
