The exhibition of Local History and Ethnography Brad you will discover with delight in a building built between 1964-1965, on one of the old streets of Brad, near the bridge over the Crișul Alb River. From Monica Dușan, curator at the Museum of Dacian and Roman Civilization, you will find that under this bridge, at the end of October 1784, Crișan spoke to the serfs from Zarand who came to the fair, and showed them the golden cross received by Horea from the emperor, and called them to the church in the village of Mesteacăn, for several explanations.
The large courtyard of the museum, green, surrounded by walnuts and imposing linden trees, reminds the visitor of their old grandparents' garden. The traditional house brought from Țebea village, is a miner's house, which in the near future will be properly arranged, brings in front of the traveler a piece of the patriarchal air of the Zărăndean village a century ago.
The house in the courtyard of the museum is built on a low stone foundation. On this foundation are placed the base of the oak house, carved on four sides, joined in straight cheotors. The walls of the house are made of fir wood beams arranged horizontally, closed at the corners in the dovetail system.
The roof is in four angles, and the materials originally used for covering were wheat straw. Recently, the roof covering was made of tiles, because the lack of hand-harvested straw and skilled craftsmen in their arrangement made it impossible to maintain the old style of roof.
If you arrive at the Brad Exhibition of Local History and Ethnography, you will find out from the curator Monica Dușan that the house in Zărăndea consists of two rooms: the living room and the pantry. Along the facade, along the two rooms, is built the porch or lintel, as it is called in the area. "After the completion of the interior design process, the space will be a place conducive to learning and practicing various crafts specific to the area, the seats and other activities," states Monica Dușan.
The exhibition of Local History and Ethnography Brad was inaugurated in January 1988, after the building was rehabilitated during the years 1985-1987. The museum's patrimony was based on the collection of folk art and ethnography of the passionate collector from Brad, Ștefan Safian. The collection of that time was bought by the County Museum of History from Deva, as the Museum of Dacian and Roman Civilization was called at that time.
“Over time, the museum's patrimony was completed by donations and acquisitions made from the mountain villages of Zarand, which today sums up all the elements of folk art and ethnography specific to the Land of Zarand. Thus, we find in the museum's collections the whole range of tools specific to the crafts of Zadar, agricultural tools, wool and hemp processing, small technical installations or their models, pieces of wood, metal, textiles, musical instruments, icons, photographic documents, all totaling a number of 1,200 objects ", adds the curator Monica Dușan.
One of the valuable pieces in the exhibition, which always arouses the interest of visitors, is the washing machine made by the peasant from Ormindea, Ioan Stoica, at the end of the 19th century, a "peasant" whose invention, a flying bird, ie a washing machine. flight, was exhibited in 1884, at the first exhibition organized by the Association "Astra" Sibiu.
In recent years, the museum has tried to attract students from schools in the area and involve them in the museum’s activities. Thus, during the summer holidays, children come to waste paper workshops, which are coordinated by the paper craftsman from the Romanian Folk Museum, Răzvan Supuran, expert of traditional stitching and glass painting.
Also, during the arts and craft school weeks, the the museum carries out activities with special guests, craftsmen and folk lyricists. The students are able to enjoy archery and they can learn many new things about the Dacians, about the war strategies of King Decebalus, as well as about the weapons used by the Dacians in battles. During The Great Lent, students from schools in the area participate in decorating eggs workshops and beating the sounding board.
