If you want to reach the "heart of Retezat" during the winter, the view is a dream, especially now that it has started to snow in this area. It is an oasis of relaxation for any family member, from young to old.

One of the entrance gates to the Retezat National Park is located near the Gura Apelor Dam, from where the view is almost breathtaking, and access to here can be done by car. As you climb towards Râul Mare, the landscape is enchanting; regardless of the season you choose to visit these places. To reach the dam, the road crosses, at least in the last half, the forest, the mountain, and in some places you can find smaller or larger pieces of rock on the road that winds along the river Râul Mare.

The artificial dam, built between 1975 and 1986 on the valley of the Râului Mare, was, at that time, the largest rock dam and clay core in Europe, located about 40 kilometers away from the city of Hațeg.

Over 200 million cubic meters of water in the reservoir

The dam from Gura Apelor or Gura Apei is located at the entrance to the Retezat National Park in the Retezat Mountains and has an area of 390 hectares. Its dimensions are impressive, it has a height of 168 meters, the length of the canopy is 460 meters, the maximum depth is about 160 meters, and the width of the dam at the base is 574 meters. Also, the reservoir holds about 210 million cubic meters of water, the size of the entire dam exceeds three times that of the pyramid of Cheops. The hydropower development Râul Mare-Retezat has the role of producing electricity, but also of regulating the course of the river and attenuating flood waves. The last completed link consists of the accumulation lake, the dam and the hydroelectric power plant from Sântămăria-Orlea. The accumulation lake from Orlea ensures the water supply of almost half of the Hunedoara district, including the towns of Hațeg, Călan, Simeria and Deva. Gura Apelor Dam is located at the confluence of the rivers Lăpușnicul Mare, Lăpușnicul Mic and Râul Șes, in the point called Gura Apelor.

Gura Apelor Dam is located on the road to Poiana Pelegii, one of the places where many tourists choose to camp. This is also an area with beautiful landscapes, from where you can choose to travel several tourist routes, visiting the mountain paths.

Loc frumos, de vazut!

4.0/ 5
